The current study examined the relationship between the AAPPS-C error detection and report rates. Second, we examined if use of the AAPPS-C had any effect on self-reported error-rate reduction in physicians. A survey was developed using a population-based cross-sectional design. Physicians were asked to report about their own error rate at baseline and over the subsequent 2 years using the AAPPS-C. The main outcome measures were the rate of detection and reporting of errors. The 2-year follow-up survey provided retrospective data for all physicians that participated. A total of 696/1,326 physicians completed the follow-up survey, indicating a rate of detection of 54% and a rate of reporting of only 30%. Logistic regression revealed that the AAPPS-C positively influenced the reporting of errors. An initial and significant rate of increase was observed for both the rates of detection and report of errors. After 2 years, there was a sustained significant increase for the detection of errors but not for the reporting of errors. Use of the AAPPS-C positively influences the rate of detection and reporting of errors in physicians. with study design, data collection and analysis, decision to publish, or preparation of the manuscript.
