Photoshop does not have built-in darkroom functionality; images must be created in the same window as the processing.

Photoshop provides drawing, raster, vector, and bitmap image editing options. You can create, modify, and manipulate images with all of Photoshop’s editing tools; this chapter provides a tutorial showing you how.

Sizing and placing

Photoshop comes with a very capable preset size and placement function, making it very easy to size images to the exact width and height dimensions needed. Photoshop offers two modes for accurately positioning images:

Absolute: A position that remains static throughout the editing process

Relative: A position that changes with a moving object

This chapter demonstrates how to size and position images in both absolute and relative mode.

Sizing images in absolute mode

Sizing images in absolute mode is accomplished by measuring a specific part of the image — its size or height and width — to find out how large the image should be. You can choose from eight preset sizes and adjust the height and width of the image accordingly.

To size an image in absolute mode, open a blank image with a preset size set as the size of the file. Click the Image Size button, and then change the width and height. The image’s size is reflected on the preview as you change the size.

You can resize an image in either portrait or landscape mode. Figure 6-1 shows an image that has been resized in landscape mode. Notice how the image is being adjusted and how the opposite side of the ruler is turning into the new image’s horizontal dimension.

Placing images in absolute mode

Photoshop offers a handful of preset placements for you to place images and define the size of the final image. You can specify the height and width of the image and create the final dimensions before the image is placed or resized.

To create a new image with a preset placement, open a blank image. Click the Image Placement button and choose a preset placement. The size of the image previewed in the Placement dialog box, shown in Figure 6-2, will show the placement of your file on your screen. (Refer to Figure 6-1 for an example of a file created with a preset placement.)

Global menu

The Global Menu appears by default under the View menu. When you select a menu item that has the keyboard equivalent of a popup menu, the Global Menu displays the items and their keyboard shortcuts as you type.

That sneaky little Line tool lets you draw lines on an image. It’s mainly useful for outlining elements of a photo without covering the areas you want to keep.
Gradients can be used for text backgrounds and backgrounds in general. They create a tonal gradation and smooth transition between colors in an image. You can use these as lightening effects as well.
The Marquee tool lets you crop out areas of an image. It’s primarily used to remove distracting objects like a face or eyes from a photograph, but you can also do other things, such as crop an image into a certain shape.
The Healing Brush tool lets you remove minor damage or imperfections in an image. It can usually fix up a few misplaced pixels. As long as you don’t apply too much, the tool will usually do the trick.
The Spot Healing Brush tool can be used for similar purposes as the Healing Brush. It works by detecting the location of objects in an image and then tries to fix them.
The Fuzziness setting can be adjusted to make objects in an image smoother, which is particularly helpful when cleaning up a bit of oil or dirt on your portraits.
The Spot Removal tool lets you remove objects and other imperfections that are less than part of the image. This tool is great for removing little pieces of dust and scratches.
The Spot Healing Brush tool can be used for similar purposes as the Healing Brush. It works by detecting the location of objects in an image and then tries to fix them.
The Grain Filter is mainly used to create a very subtle texture that works with line drawing, a brush stroke or other elements of an image. It can also be useful to make your image look a bit aged.
The Muzzle tool lets you create a realistic-looking muzzle for animals.
The Rounded Rectangle tool allows you to round corners of images. It’s most useful for image corners that were added after the image was developed.
The Lasso tool lets you select an area and then move and scale it around. The tool is useful for adjusting and retouching specific areas of an image without altering the rest. It’s very useful for tracing the edges of things like logos, graphics or any other objects you want to edit.
The Flood Fill tool lets you select an area and then fill the entire thing with whatever color you select. Flood Fill is useful for removing backgrounds and objects from an image, and then bringing the focus to what you want

Titus Chatterton (c. 1645 – 1709) was an English clergyman, schoolmaster and antiquary.

He was a native of Suffolk, the son of Sir Christopher Chatterton. He graduated from Queens’ College, Cambridge in 1666. In 1671 he was appointed chaplain of St Augustine’s Chapel, Cambridge, and in 1674 became precentor of All Soul’s College, where he remained till 1688.

Chatterton was presented on 9 April 1673 to the vicarage of Bury St Edmunds, and in 1685 to the rectory of Horley, Surrey. The living of Horley had been sequestered in 1674, and a committee of the House of Commons having decided in favour of Chatterton, he was appointed to the living.

At the same time he became curate and schoolmaster of the grammar school at Forest Gate, London. In 1688 he was made rector of St Nicholas’s church, London, from which he resigned to become librarian to the bishop of London. In 1694 he was instituted to the rectory of Congresbury, Somerset, but on account of the troublesome state of his health he resigned it in 1704.
