The game is based on the fantasy novel of the same name by Kyohei Nanami (published by Yen Press). “Tarnished Prince” is licensed by Yen Press, and the author gave his consent to the game as well as the character design.

With the publication of the novel, Eorzea: The Vanishing Darkness, A Realm Reborn and the Llandra Arc come to a close. In January 2018, a new expansion will begin, the second major expansion of A Realm Reborn named to Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers. The first expansion, which launched in December 2014, saw the level cap increase to level 70 for all classes, and its first major content update, The Ring of the Planes, launched in September 2015.

The new raid dungeons included the new fractal, “Soulnater”, and the new major story missions included “Fractals and Strange Tales”. The second major content update, Lightning in a Bottle, added the new square, “Levistone”, the new adventure area, “Sanctum”, and new quests.
