This invention relates generally to magnetic data storage systems, and more particularly to a magnetic data storage system employing a magnetic thin-film sensor for measuring the position of a movable slider relative to the surface of the magnetic storage media.
2. Description of the Prior Art
In magnetic data storage systems, magnetic read/write heads or transducers are employed to magnetize magnetic media (such as magnetic tape or magnetic disk) or to sense magnetic flux from the media as the magnetic tape or disk is moved over the surface of the tape or disk. It is desirable in such systems to sense the position of the tape or disk relative to the head or transducer. For example, in magnetic disk data storage systems, a magnetic read/write head is employed to magnetize the various data tracks on the magnetic disk in a desired sequence. In a tracking mode of operation, the read/write head is moved relative to the surface of the disk to follow the location of the data track in which the desired data is recorded. The position of the read/write head relative to the data track is sensed to provide feedback to servo control circuitry which controls the velocity of the read/write head as it follows the desired data track. The tracks on the magnetic disk must be sufficiently spaced from one another to avoid interference therebetween. In a contact start/stop (CSS) mode of operation, a magnetic read/write head is moved in contact with the disk to establish an air-bearing surface (ABS) which rides on the disk surface.
